THEN & NOW: REFLECTIONS ON THE PAST

From the VASFAA Archives, Winter 1984

(Information has been taken from the Winter 1984 issue of the VASFAA Newsletter and President Rita Bodie’s 1983-84 Annual Report to the VASFAA Membership)

As expressed in her introduction of the VASFAA Annual Report, President Rita Bodie stated the 1983-84 was a typical year…”a year full of activity and change”.  What was new?  1)  The Commonwealth of Virginia brought about the CSAP Program.  The membership was struggling with how the new program worked. 2)  The federal government let the authority to consolidate loans expire without renewal legislation.  3)  The VASFAA Board recommended to the membership that the association should be incorporated to protect its members.

Our Executive Board was:

                  President………………………………Rita Bodie, George Mason

Vice President…………………………John McRae, Roanoke

Secretary………………………………Steve Stocks, Virginia Wesleyan

Treasurer………………………………Larry Ewing, Virginia Western

Special Appointee……………………..Eugene Cattie, VELA

Past President………………………….Marie Bennett, NOVA

The 1984 Spring VASFAA Conference was held on April 25-27th at the Lynchburg Hilton.  Program Chair, Marvin Ragland of Longwood College, promised an exciting conference with was highlighted by sessions on “Satisfactory Academic Progress”, “Using the Computer in the Financial Aid Office”, and “The Future Delivery System of Federal Funds”.  On the schedule as speakers were Elliott Shearer, Mayor of Lynchburg, Dr. George Rainsford, President of Lynchburg College and Congressman Rick Boucher of the 9th District.

Running for 1984-85 VASFAA Office was Marvin Ragland and Paige Johnson for President-Elect and Vern Fairchilds and Karen Koonce for Treasurer.

There was a successful Awareness Campaign in January 1984.  Governor Charles Robb signed off on the proclamation making January “Financial Aid Awareness Month”.  Sherrye Ward of the SEAA was the committee chair.

Rod Moore of Southwest Virginia Community College coordinated the High School Counselor Workshop Program.  Over 615 high school counselors, college counselors and others attended nine counselor workshops across the state.

Noteworthy news from the winter 1984 issue stated that Randy Craig, formerly of  SCHEV, was now Manager of Program Review with the SEAA, Linda Fritsch, formerly with SAFE Systems, was now Assistant Vice President with United Virginia Bank in Richmond, and lastly, Holly Rison, formerly with Capital Credit Corporation (a VASFAA Sponsor), was now with Randolph-Macon College as a financial Aid Counselor.

Archivist note:  As you can see from this article, many of our “old” VASFAA members are still active!!! ---  Holly K. Rison, VASFAA Archivist

Editors note:  To Rod, Gene, Marie, Sherrye, Karen, Randy, Vern, and Marvin - Holly called you old, not me.  If it’s any consolation, her name is up there as well.
