VASFAA Voice Editor
Welcome to the transition
issue of the VASFAA Voice for Summer 2004. As you read this
edition, the VASFAA board retreat will be behind us and plans
will have been laid for 0405 activities. This issue will
include the themes of both administrations. "Going the
Distance" was the theme for 0304 under the guidance and
direction of President Sherwin Hibbets. Sherwin's address to
you in this issue is both reflective and a commentary of the
bright future being provided by our incoming leadership. You
likely have noticed that the articles this year have led with
the phrase, "On Track with.....", to continually push the
theme...."Going the Distance". Similarly, the headlines will
begin with phrasing to "push" the theme "Keep the Light
Shining". "Shining On with......." has been identified as the
theme header which you will see in this and in future issues.
Tom Morehouse, incoming President for 0405, provides a look
into the future in his address to you. Take a minute to review
both of their addresses and related articles in this issue.
Summer is a transition period for many
of our college bound students and their families. It is also a
transition period for students who are graduating and their
families. In both cases, the parents are hoping for some peace
an quiet on the homefront - not that their wish always comes
true. My 22 year old just graduated in May from UMCP and she
is headed back home both to our delight but considerable
surprise. She is our wanderer with more travel logged to date
than most people you know. Kristen's return and her brother's
wedding in July will be a transition of major proportions for
us. The article from Richard Burt provides some advice and
guidance for assisting your graduating students in the
repayment of their student loans, while Gene Logan offers tips
on consolidation to help your students make a successful
transition. Some of our colleagues have their own transitions
which are briefly reported in the "People and Places in the
News" section.
As you face the masses for admissions,
graduation and registration activities, you might find some
identification with the "Obituary for Common Sense" in this
issue. You may also find yourself longing for days gone by,
however, our reflections on 1904 - the way it was - might give
you pause for a reflection on what the future holds. We hope
you enjoy both of these "fun" escapes from the daily grind.
The Newsletter Committee wishes you a
wonderful and safe Summer. See you on the road in 0405.

staff will review all articles submitted for publication.
Submissions should be of a professional interest to the
association and not include marketing and/or advertising of
products, services, websites or personnel.
Full articles should be no longer than
two typed pages single spaced. It is requested that all
submissions be provided in 10 pt size with Arial font type to

AD and Picture Guidelines: The online
newsletter flows best with graphics submitted in .jpeg or .gif

We are seeking Gold Sponsors to

vertical ad would be about 2'' wide x 4-5'' high. An example
of the size of traditional ads may be found at:
http://www.vasfaa.org/newsletters/fall2002/page1.htm. We
had one sponsor submit an animated gif. ad which can be viewed
at: (http://www.vasfaa.org/newsletters/summer2003/page6.htm)
(Note: Ads are only accepted from
Sponsors at the Gold level who receive a free ad in the issue
of their choice based on availability)
