Welcome to the Spring issue of the
VASFAA Voice – the third issue of 0708. This issue is the “Conference”
issue. I hope that it is helpful for your conference planning. In fact,
there is an article specific to conference planning included. Our president
opens this issue with some noteworthy remarks – each of us should
take the time to review them.
It shouldn’t need to be said but our industry is in turmoil. It should be that obvious to everyone in our professions, whether you represent a school, a foundation, a lending-related organization or family advocates for college access. It should be clear to everyone by now that there is a Code of Conduct, Code of Ethics and basic conflict of interest issues that warrant our mutual attention. I am of the opinion that it isn’t obvious to everyone. How do you feel? If perception drives a person’s sense of reality, more work is yet to be done. In the end, our mutual goal is to provide open choice and first rate guidance to students and their families based on their best interests. If our profession doesn’t provide uncompromised guidance, the negative effects can be incalculable over the course of their lifetimes. By the time you have read this, your conference plans should be complete. Rooms apparently went very fast so the turnout should be excellent. The venue is brand new and how appropriate it is given our theme for the year. This issue is packed with timely information for your reading. Let me know if you like it, read it, want to be a part of it, or suggest improvements. The Newsletter Committee is always seeking willing participants to join our committee. If you are interested, please contact me directly at 301-865-6246 or via my email address below. My cell phone number has not changed. The next issue of the newsletter is scheduled for publication on June 1st. Please send your input by March 20th to me at gary.a.spoales@bankofamerica.com. Thank you once again to everyone who provided material for this newsletter. The entire association appreciates your efforts. As always, this issue’s contributors are listed at the end of the newsletter. Article Guidelines Picture Guidelines
