VASFAA 2005-2006 Elections

Candidate for the Office of President-Elect

ERIK MELIS

Statement of Candidacy
It is with great honor and excitement that I thank the Nominations and Elections Committee for giving me the opportunity to run for the office of VASFAA President-Elect. VASFAA has given me so much professionally and personally over the past 13 years that I relish the chance to give back to VASFAA by serving in this leadership position for the association.

I have been able, over the course of my VASFAA membership, to serve on numerous VASFAA committees including Public Relations, Training, Electronic Services, to chair the Electronic Services Committee for 4 years, and to serve as a Representative-at-Large and Commissioner for Information Services for the past 2 years. I was also fortunate enough to be able to do presentations at a number of VASFAA conferences. These opportunities have given me great insight into the workings of the association and the needs of the VASFAA membership.

My work with VASFAA has also opened doors for me to work with SASFAA and NASFAA, serving on the SASFAA Program Committee and the NASFAA Electronic Initiatives Committee and chairing the SASFAA Electronic Services Committee for the past 3 years. The experiences I’ve had and continue to have with our national and regional associations can only serve to help me in my leadership role for VASFAA.

If elected as VASFAA President-Elect, I will take the office knowing full well that I cannot do the job by myself. To be successful as VASFAA President-Elect, I need the full support, cooperation, and involvement of the entire VASFAA membership. I will reach out to all to try to continue to build an atmosphere of inclusion within the organization. I will work closely with the other members of the board to set realistic goals and objectives for the association and to provide continuity in its leadership. I will try to select strong committee chairs who will be successful in helping to meet the goals of the VASFAA Strategic Plan and who will help ensure that we provide opportunities to develop new leaders within the association.

I would not be true to myself or to you, the VASFAA membership, if I did not also say that as VASFAA President-Elect, I will have a lot of fun. I do not believe that being professional, successful, and having fun are mutually exclusive. In fact, quite the contrary, I believe that you are more successful and provide more professional outcomes if you are truly having fun at what you are doing. So, I will actively encourage all of you to “have fun” being VASFAA members.

In keeping with my favorite TV show, Star Trek: Next Generation, I want to help take VASFAA where VASFAA has not gone before; and as Captain Jean Luc Piccard of the starship Enterprise might say, 'I need you, your vote, your involvement and your cooperation to help “make it so”!'
