Updated President's Message: Spring 2014

Dear VASFAA Colleagues,

I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your family and those closest to you.  I had almost a full month off of work and was able to spend some time in Michigan with my family.  It was a great time of relaxation, but I am glad to be back in the swing of things here at work and to be back in a state without snow-I am not one for cold weather!

Classes started here at Liberty today and I am sure that many of you are experiencing the excitement and stress of getting students prepared for another semester.  I am sure that you are explaining Verification requirements, MPN's, EC's, and other financial aid jargon on a consistent basis at this point.  Just know that this profession could not continue to function without dedicated individuals to talk with students and help them understand the financial aid process.  I know that I am truly thankful for our "front line" staff that see students face-to-face or talk to them over the phone on a regular basis.

As we begin another semester and start gearing up for 14/15, let us not forget to have a fresh outlook on our profession.  As you consider your resolutions for 2014, I hope that you have considered how you can continue to grow in your profession as a financial aid administrator.  I have made it a goal this year to dedicate myself to my profession so that the passion I have for students and seeing them succeed will increase.  If you have not already, I challenge you to consider a few goals you have for your profession in 2014.  It could be regarding time management, delegation, attitude towards coworkers, or maybe a desired promotion.

On another note, I wanted to make all of you aware of three events that we have coming up very soon here within the Commonwealth.  First, we have Super FAFSA Week that will take place February 1st-February 8th and aims to assist students with FAFSA filing for the next award year.  We have over 60 sites that are prepared to assist students during this week!  Secondly, the Non-Conference Committee is gearing up for another Spring Workshop that will take place in early March.  Stay tuned for additional details that will be coming out later on this week regarding this event.  Lastly, the Conference Committee has been busy planning the details of the annual VASFAA Conference that will take place May 19th-May 21st at the Omni Richmond.  We will also be having the New Aid Officer's Workshop on May 18th prior to the conference.  I have been privileged to be a part of their committee calls and this will definitely be a conference you will not want to miss.  Keep your eye on the Conference page for additional details in the coming months.

Keep Pressing On!
